A 14-year-old girl fell from the fourth floor of a residential building at Vasundhara in Ghaziabad on Wednesday after she tried to save herself from a group of rampaging monkeys.
The girl is currently admitted at GTB Hospital in Delhi with multiple fractures and other injuries.
The incident happened when Jyoti went to fetch some clothes from a residence in Sector 4B. The girl’s family, which migrated from Lucknow, irons clothes for a living and Jyoti helps her parents fetch and deliver them.
“I was on the third floor when a group of monkeys started advancing towards me. I ran upstairs to the fourth floor terrace where another group was present. When they started advancing towards me, I kept going back and eventually reached the edge of the roof from where I fell down,” the victim told Hindustan Times.
Her father, Prakash, said she has suffered fractures on both legs and also in her right hand and is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
“We have admitted the child in the orthopaedic ward and she is under observation. There are multiple fractures but there is nothing to worry about,” said a doctor in the hospital.
The Superintendent of police (SP), SS Yadav, said that monkey menace has become a common problem across the city.
Local residents said that monkeys are a big problem and it becomes difficult to venture out whenever the simians arrive in groups. “Monkey menace is common in our area; a child was also attacked sometime back. The authorities must do something to get rid of the animals,” said Satyajeet Yadav, a resident of sector 4B.
When asked about the steps taken to check the simian menace, municipal commissioner Jitendra Singh said that his department had earlier initiated some action but animal rights activists thwarted the move. “Animal rights activists resisted even when we tried to catch stray dogs. For monkeys, we are trying to take help of the forest department officials,” Singh said.
