A 53-year-old primary school teacher was stabbed in the classroom, on Friday.
The teacher, Bitty Bhan, was teaching class II students at a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) school in the Trilokpuri area of east Delhi, police said.
Around 11.45 am, a masked youth aged around 18 years reportedly entered the classroom.
“The accused had covered his face with a piece of cloth. He entered the classroom and asked whether it was class IV. When the teacher said it was not, he tried to snatch her chain. On her resisting, he stabbed on her thigh,” said OP Tiwari, additional deputy commissioner of police (east).
The primary school in Gali number 16 in the Trilokpuri area shares its premises with an ayurvedic dispensary.
“There was no security guard at the school gates. The school shares the premises with an ayurvedic dispensary, there is a common entrance for both,” said the officer.
“The children were shocked as the man attacked the teacher during the class. When she shouted for help, the accused ran away,” said the officer.
The school staff rushed Bhan to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where she was provided medical attention. A resident of Mayur Vihar, she was sent back home.
“She was discharged after first aid at the hospital. We have recorded her statement and are investigating the case,” said the officer.
Schoolteachers said security was a concern on the premises as there was unrestrained movement of people due to the presence of the dispensary.
The teachers will meet the education director to register their protest against slack security in the school premises.
Police said they were questioning the petty thieves in the area as well as other criminals to find the assailant.
“According to the information we have, this person had come to the dispensary and he was reportedly drunk. He saw a purse lying in a class nearby and tried to snatch it. When the teacher resisted, he stabbed her,” said Prithwiraj Sahni, chairman of the MCD’s education committee.
