Unhappy with the “poor standard of service” of auto-rickshaws, the Delhi government is planning to introduce alternative mode of para-transit to supplement to the existing fleet of three-wheelers on city roads.

In response to a question by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jagdish Mukhi in the assembly on Wednesday, Dikshit said the government was in touch with manufacturers of battery-operated vehicles.

Mukhi said while the population of Delhi registered a huge increase in the past few years, the number of autorickshaws remained stagnant at 55,000.

Interestingly, Dikshit earlier stated in the assembly that the government was mulling to phase out auto-rickshaws.

Her office, however, later clarified that Dikshit said the “autos would be phased out only after we (the government) finds an alternative to them.”

Refusal to go, not going by the fare meter and fleecing passengers are some of the most common complaints against the auto-rickshaw drivers. The auto-rickshaws in Delhi are reportedly run by the financier-mafia forcing drivers to fleece passengers to pay daily rent to the owners.

Accepting that the number of auto-rickshaws plying in the Capital was too less to cater to the huge population of Delhi, Delhi Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said his department was mulling to bringing in alternative vehicles.

“We are working on a scheme to start 6-8 seat vehicles under ‘Grameen Sewa scheme’ for rural areas and unauthorised colonies where buses cannot ply. We hope to come out with a scheme by May this year,” Lovely said.

“We are also exploring possibilities to introduce radio-taxis at fares equivalent to the fares of auto-rickshaws,” Lovely said.

Responding to the observation that auto-rickshaws were being managed by mafia and there were many illegal autos running in the Capital, Lovely said the government had taken steps to rein in erring auto-rickshaws.
