Even as a majority of MPs, MLAs and ministers from Telangana submitted their resignations, the Centre said it is in no hurry to take a decision on separation of the region from Andhra Pradesh.
Describing the situation in the state as normal, home minister P Chidambaram on Monday said the Congress leadership is in touch with the agitated legislators and is persuading them to withdraw the resignations.
"There is no need to be alarmed. The resignations did not come as a surprise to us. The Congress party is in touch with the legislators and we would be able to persuade them to be patient,” Chidambaram told reporters.
Stating that an all party meet on the issue could be convened only after all parties submit their views, Chidambaram made it clear that the Government has so far not taken any decision on Telangana.
"We are trying to work out a consensus … these are complex and extremely sensitive issues … one has to show understanding and patience (while dealing with such demands),” the home minister said.
A meeting of the Telangana Congress leaders with Chidambaram and finance minister Pranab Mukherjee last month did not yield any assurance, following which the legislators decided to resign now.
Meanwhile, nine Congress Lok Sabha MPs from Telangana who were to submit their resignations to speaker Meira Kumar in the morning would meet her in the evening for the purpose.
"As there was no serious consideration from the core committee it is inevitable for us to go by the peoples’ decision. The people of Telangana strongly believe that the resignations is the only way for achieving Telangana State,” the letter to the Speaker said.
The resignations are to make an impact on the high command and to achieve the goal of Telangana, the MPs said.
