On Thursday, Delhi Government suspended two top officials from the health department on charges of corruption during CWG. At that time, Dr DS Rao was the chief medical officer in Central Procurement Agency and Dr S Bhattacharjee was director, health services.

“An internal inquiry by the health department found several irregularities in the bulk purchases of gloves and sutures. Two separates cases are on against them and suspension orders have been issued on one count so far,” said an official from the department of health. “Both matters have been referred to the CVC for further action,” said the official. Although the official refused to elaborate, he said that enquiry report showed that both gloves and sutures were procured at “exorbitant prices.”

CAG 2011 report had indicted the health department for the arbitrary procurement of “must-haves” like ambulances and ice making machines. The report shows that furniture worth R1.2 crore was purchased through open tender with just one day’s notice period and medicine purchases worth R95 lakh were done without any tendering process.

The CAG report had also slammed the health department for their last minute purchase of 31 ambulances for the CWG games at nearly R9 crore, which was at least four times higher than the market price.
