The Delhi government will provide toilet facilities at 700 slum clusters of the city as part of the ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The decision was taken in view of shortage of toilet blocks in slums, said Amar Nath, Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board’s (DUSIB) Chief Executive Officer.
DUSIB has already prepared a database of toilet blocks available in JJ clusters as well as identified the deficit. The DUSIB is now planning on build toilets at these places at the earliest, he said.
“As part of the campaign, DUSIB has already carried out a massive cleanliness drive in 185 night shelters in different parts of the Capital,” Nath’s statement read.
Under the drive, officials and volunteers from various NGOs cleaned the night shelters “by removing unwanted material, malba (construction debris) and garbage and ensuring that area surrounding the shelters also remains clean,” he said.
The DUSIB has also set up a centralised control room at its headquarters to monitor the cleanliness drive, which has spanned various offices of the board as well as night shelters and slum clusters.
The board has also constituted 11 teams, each headed by a deputy director to inspect the drive as well as ensure that cleaning is a regular and continuous process in night shelters and JJ clusters.
