The Delhi government is upgrading the shelters for the homeless in the city to 'all-weather homes'.

Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) CEO Chetan Sanghi said work on improving the shelter homes, provided during the winters of 2011, has already started and they are expected to be ready by June 15. Assisted by NGOs, the DUSIB has decided that 30 of the total 150 shelters, which report low occupancy, will be used as special shelter homes.

Sanghi said they will cater to people with special needs such as children, families, women, physically challenged, senior citizens and those suffering from substance abuse. The DDA has offered one plot at Narela and two at Rohini to build permanent shelter homes, he said.
