A Raja’s first night in custody was spent at the agency’s headquarters under the watchful eye of guards from the Nagaland Armed Police. Though he was interrogated at night, sources said, “he slept well”.
Raja and two arrested co-accused, former telecom secretary Siddhartha Behura and former private secretary RK Chandolia, were kept on the second floor. “The trio was given separate rooms, that were kept under watch” said a source.
“He has been asked if he wants to confess, but Raja refused.”
The rooms occupied by the three accused have basic furniture, including a bed and wooden chairs. Raja’s family, the source added, had sent home-cooked vegetarian meal for him. On Thursday, his family also sent a bedsheet for him.
The accused were provided with a few copies of newspapers and magazines.
Barring his sleeping hours on Wednesday and when the three were taken to the court, they were kept busy by investigators of the agency’s anti-corruption wing.
“The three are being interrogated separately, but we will make them confront each other to elicit crucial information,” said the source. On Thursday, Raja appeared in the court, dressed in a grey safari suit, looking confused.
Throughout an hour-long course of arguments by his defence counsel and CBI counsel, Raja maintained silence, and seemed to communicate via facial expressions with his lawyers. When the CBI counsel piled up accusations at him, Raja shook his head in anguish.
After this, he was taken to the chamber of the CBI counsel. Later when the judge asked him if he wanted to meet his family, Raja appeared unable to respond.
