A 30-year-old security guard was crushed under the wheels of a DTC bus near Mandi house Metro station on Thursday morning.
Ram Rajkumar was going towards Gole market on his bicycle when a DTC bus, which was going towards New Delhi station, hit him.
"The victim was a resident of Pandav Nagar in east Delhi and worked at a private company in Gole Market. After being hit by the bus, he fell and came under the rear wheel of bus," a senior police officer said. Rajkumar was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.
"We have arrested the driver, Devendra Kumar," the officer added.
This year, accidents involving DTC buses have risen by 65%. To date this year, the Capital has witnessed 81 accidents involving DTC buses against last year's figure of 48 accidents. According to police, the total number of lives claimed so far this year by DTC buses has crossed 90. And till December 15, five DTC bus drivers were booked for drunken driving.
The slump in performance also showed when Delhi Traffic Police was forced to crack down on DTC bus drivers for indiscipline on city roads.
As a result, the year 2011 witnessed a sharp rise in prosecution against DTC drivers. The official data of Delhi Traffic Police shows that 6,436 challans were issued against DTC buses this year against 5,260 challans in 2010.
Police said there has also been over six-fold increase in the number of DTC buses impounded for violating traffic norms in 2011 against last year. According to police data, till December 15 this year 760 DTC buses were confiscated by the traffic police for flouting traffic rules. In 2010, only 120 DTC buses were impounded by the police.
