Emphasising the need to get youth more involved in party affairs, newly-appointed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Delhi unit president Vijendra Gupta said on Saturday that women, backward classes, minority and other regional groups will be given preference in the party.

A three-time councillor, Gupta was one of four probables for the post. Former union minister Vijay Goel, ex-MLA from Saket Vijay Jolly and ex-MLA Nand Kishore Garg were in the race but lost out to him.

Gupta’s appointment is being seen as the party’s attempt to involve more youth in its functioning. “His appointment will infuse fresh energy into the party. I am extremely happy with his selection,” said V K Malhotra, leader of opposition, Delhi legislative assembly.

“I am glad that Gupta has been selected. He will bring in fresh ideas, which will help in the functioning of the party,” said O P Kohli, former Delhi BJP unit president.

Gupta said that addressing the issue of price rise would be at the top of his agenda.

“The Delhi government has become too arrogant and needs to bring in more transparency in its functioning,” added Gupta.

“Rather than working for the common people, they are making their life hell by increasing prices of essential commodities almost everyday,” he said.
