More than a month after three bike-borne assailants shot dead a village headman in Gurgaon, prompting agitated villagers to lynch one of them on the spot, the Delhi Police arrested the mastermind behind the incident from a hotel in outer Delhi.

Joy Tirkey, additional deputy commissioner of police (crime), said Sanjay, 31, and his brother Rakesh, a property dealer, had organised the killing of Hayatpur village sarpanch Rakesh Yadav on June 23.

"Sanjay and Rakesh hired two criminals from Muzaffarnagar in UP to kill Yadav. One of them has been identified as Praveen, while the other is unknown. The duo was promised R1 lakh each," said Tirkey. After he was arrested from near Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rohini Sector 10 on Tuesday, Sanjay's interrogation revealed that the sarpanch and the two brothers were engaged in a prolonged rivalry.

“Sanjay said that in 2009, after a quarrel, Rakesh got a case of attempt to murder registered against Sanjay and his brother. A few days before the murder, the sarpanch had stopped the brothers from installing a pump in the village,” said Tirkey.
