The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is hoping to start the construction work of the multi-level parking at Khan Market this year itself.
According to the civic agency, the Union urban development (UD) ministry’s Land and Development Office (L&DO) has allotted them space. Currently, a gymnasium exists on the plot. The civic agency is planning to merge this piece of land with its own plot, which currently houses NDMC staff quarters. The civic body will remove their staff quarters, which will create space of about 5,000 sqm.
“The traffic police have also accepted the plot as an ideal location. We are hoping to cause minimum inconvenience to the shoppers and shopkeepers. We will merge the gymnasium plot and the staff quarters to create adequate space. The UD ministry has given us the go-ahead for this project,” said Santosh Vaidya, secretary NDMC.
The construction of a multi-level parking is part of the larger traffic circulation plan being worked out by the NDMC. “We are still working out the modalities as to whether it will be a conventional multi-level parking lot or an automatic one. A detailed report is being prepared,” said a senior NDMC official.
Khan Market traders have been demanding a multi-level parking lot for quite some time as the available parking land is inadequate to accommodate the number of vehicles entering the market.
The problem has only compounded with the government allowing residential flats on the upper floor to be used as commercial establishments after payment of conversion charges.
