Hands-free drivers could now face jail

If caught talking on the cellphone while driving, you could face up to three months in jail, reports Abhishek Bhalla.

If caught talking on the cellphone while driving, you could face up to three months in jail, the Delhi Police told motorists on Saturday. The announcement comes a day after a Mumbai court sent three men to jail for the same offence.

Drivers caught talking on the cellphone in Delhi are now fined Rs 15,000, a step the police say has not helped curb the practice. The police, henceforth, plan to send such offenders to court.

“We will be more strict with the offenders and all the challans will be sent to court, which can send the drivers to jail for up to three months. We will not prosecute people on the spot from now on,” said Qamar Ahmed, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
