In a first-ever step of its kind, the Delhi High Court has utilised web conferencing to record an 83-year-old woman’s statement to adjudicate her property dispute with her brother-in-law, which was pending for over two decades.

The court of Joint Registrar Girish Kathpalia resorted to the web conferencing technology to record Mumbai resident Vimla Monga’s statement on June 1, after her repeated failure to appear in the court due to old age.

Monga, currently staying in Mumbai with her daughter, has been objecting to the claim of her late husband’s brother over a property in Defence Colony on the ground that she too had a share in it.

“The testimony of the witness was recorded in the court’s computer and the printout has been signed by the counsel for the petitioner,” said Kathpalia in his order, adding, “Prior to the commencement of the cross examination, on my directions, the counsel for Vimla who is stationed at Bombay with witness, revolved the camera around the room to ensure that no one except the witness was present in the room.”
