It was an informer’s tip that first left the Northwest Delhi Police confused and later shocked.
The proclaimed offender they thought was dead and whose body they handed over to his family was alive, kicking and working on his next crime. On investigating, the police unearthed a plot straight out of a Hollywood movie.
The police have arrested a 32-year-old criminal from Punjab who, in an effort to prove that he was dead, murdered an unidentified man and dumped his identity on him.
The accused, Karma Aggarwal, allegedly strangulated an unidentified man and set his body on fire with the help of his associate Satnam (20) near Bhalswa Dairy on May 22.
“Aggarwal was involved in several criminal cases in Punjab and some cases are pending trial. To get rid of the cases and avoid going to jail, he conspired with Satnam and decided to kill someone and show the man as himself,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) N.S. Bundela said.
“He knew that after he would be declared dead, all pending cases against him would be forfeited. He was sure that his plan would work,” added Bundela.
The police said the two accused came to Delhi and found a person sleeping on the pavement under the influence of alcohol near Burari.
They put the person on their scooter and brought him to a deserted area in Bhalswa Dairy Lake near Jahangirpuri and strangled him.
The police said the accused came prepared with all the documents, which would prove that the dead body was his.
“They then doused the drunk man in petrol and set him on fire. Before that Aggarwal put his clothes on the victim and planted his purse, photocopy of election ID card and three photographs on him,” said Bundela.
Police said Aggarwal’s relatives also identified the body as his and cremated it. It was only later the police got information that he was alive.
The police are now trying to identify the man Aggarwal killed.
