Heat aggravates their ailments

“We have even stopped keeping track of how long the power goes out for. It goes so frequently and for so long that our inverters run out of battery,” said VK Gauba (76), a pensioner living with his family at GK II. Jatin Anand reports.

“We have even stopped keeping track of how long the power goes out for. It goes so frequently and for so long that our inverters run out of battery,” said VK Gauba (76), a pensioner living with his family at G.K II.

Electricity is certainly a precious commodity in this part of the city. With the monsoon conspicuous by its absence and the unbearable heat maintaining its relentless grip on the city, the daily 8-10 hour power cuts have left residents of GK-II literally fuming.

Coupled with the Delhi heat, the frequent and unpredictable power cuts have disrupted the schedule of many families like the Gauba household.

“As it is, people in our age group face a lot of problems because of the Delhi heat. The power cuts make it worse and make us susceptible to health problems like dehydration and high blood pressure,” said his wife Mandakini.

“Though the government has announced a number of measures to improve the power infrastructure of the capital, I do not know how it is going to be when it’s time for the Commonwealth Games next year,” said Gauba.
