Come August, finding parking space in the Connaught Place area won’t be such a hassle. That’s because the city’s first computerised, multi-level parking lot on Baba Kharak Singh Marg will be operational by then.

Charges will remain the same as they are in NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) areas — starting at Rs 10 an hour.

The new facility — with two basements and nine floors — will have hydraulic lifts that move cars to the upper levels. Vehicles once parked will continue to move vertically or horizontally, depending on vacant spots.

“A computer will locate vacant spots and keep shifting the location of the car. The process for retrieval will take just two minutes,” said a senior NDMC official.

Each car owner will be given a smart card with a unique identification number that links the car to the place where it is parked, said the official, adding that bigger cars — such as SUVs — will have a different parking space inside the lot.

Construction of the parking lot started in October 2009 and it will be ready well in time for the Commonwealth Games in October. “The structure will be complete by May-end and from June the mechanical work will start. A Pune-based company will install all the state-of-the-art machinery,” the official said.
