The IITs, IIMs, central universities and other institutions funded by the central government may soon be forced to hike fees and withdraw hostel subsidies for students.
The human resource development ministry recently asked the autonomous and statutory bodies under its control to explore the option of generating resources by revising tuition fees and levying charges on certain facilities.
“Given the constraints of resources leading to mandatory cuts in non-salary expenditure, it is expected that the institutions would make efforts to generate additional resources by gradual revision of tuition fees, levy of user fees, withdrawal of hostel subsidies and other measures,” higher education secretary R.P. Agrawal said in the note.
The finance ministry had earlier issued a set of guidelines to all ministries, asking them to cut down expenditure.
