The body of a Hindu College student who allegedly committed suicide was found in his hostel room early on Sunday morning, the police said.
Chongtham Kripa Singh, a second-semester student of music honours originally from Imphal, allegedly strangled himself using his mobile charger.
His body was found by his roommate and a few others around 7-7.30am with a suicide note beside it, the police said.
“In the note, he said goodbye to his family and friends,” said a police official.
His father, Chongtham Bijoy Singh, said his son was depressed. “He was battling depression and had been undergoing treatment,” he said.
When asked about the cause of Kripa’s depression, Bijoy said it may have been academic or exam-related stress.
Concerned over Kripa’s health, Bijoy had been living in the city, in a guest house close to his son’s college for the past few days. One of his sisters was also studying in the city, pursuing her MSc.
The police said when friends knocked on Kripa’s door and didn’t receive any response, they tried to see what had happened, through the window.
That’s when they saw Kripa’s body. He was rushed to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, which is situated close to the college, but it was too late.
The body was sent for post mortem and the results are awaited.
Those who knew him said Kripa did not share his troubles with them but it was clear he was troubled.
“I knew him for the last two months. We used to meet for coffee sometimes. He never told me anything but I could tell that there was something wrong. He looked depressed,” said 19-year-old political science student Deborsee Borah, a friend of Kripa’s.
This is the second incident of suicide at DU’s Hindu College in six months.
