Home Science as an undergraduate discipline addresses issues of human development. Colleges have an Honours course as well as a Pass Course. A student should have a science background to be eligible for the Honours course.
The general perception is that home science grooms a person into an efficient housekeeper. Dr. Renu Pathak, Reader in Biochemistry at Lady Irwin College, says the course is more profession-oriented than before.
Food and Nutrition, Resource Management, Human Development, Child Psychology, Fabric & Apparel Sciences and Communication and Extension.
Says Bhanumati Sharma, Reader, Child Development, Lady Irwin College, “It is a matter of breaking gender stereotypes. We are thinking about changing the name of the course, but perhaps letting boys into the course might help cleanse the nomenclature. Even though the course is not only about home, why shouldn't men be partners in home life, and take pride in doing things for the home and family?”
Priya, a student of Lady Irwin College and an aspiring nutritionist, says: “Home Science is quite contrary to the perception that it is a very demanding professional course. I feel the course has a lot to offer and it's about time students start looking at it in the right way.”
