If the MCD has its way, the city's famous spots may soon see horse buggies making the India experience more fullsome for tourists. On Wednesday, the civic agency set up a committee to look into the feasibility of the idea.
If the proposal is cleared by the MCD's Standing Committee, buggies will soon ply in tourist places. It will bring additional income to horse-owners who currently rent out these buggies during weddings.
The proposal was first placed before the Standing Committee in January. The civic body had tried to amend its policy for grant of licence to horse buggies to promote licencing and to guarantee proper care of the animals. But this proposal had been deferred after opposition from animal lovers.
The MCD has yet again taken up the issue to improve the lot of horse buggy owners in the city. "After thorough reflection, a new licencing policy will soon be brought in," said Yogender Chandolia, chairman of MCD's Standing Committee.
According to the veterinary department of the MCD, there are 138 licenced horse buggies in the city whereas the actual number is much more. "In order to have a proper record of all these buggies… and to regulate them…, a proper policy to issue the licences to these buggies is essential," the proposal states.
