Horse buggies will soon start plying on Delhi roads again. A committee set up by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to look into the feasibility of allowing horse buggies to run in tourist places has decided in its favour.

However, they have a condition that the horses will have to be given stables away from the main city and should be well taken care of.

Sarita Chaudhari, BJP councillor and head of the committee, said that the proposal will be formally approved in the Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday. “After the proposal is approved, horse buggies can be used for both wedding functions and tourism,” she said.

In January, the civic body had tried to amend its policy for grant of license to horse buggies and a new policy was formulated called ‘Policy for license to Horse Buggies’. “We had deferred the proposal earlier but it has been reintroduced,” said Yogender Chandolia, chairman, MCD’s Standing Committee.

Among various aspects, the proposal adds that only buggies drawn by at least four wheels will be given license as buggy with two horses would be treated as a ‘tonga’ which has already been phased out by the MCD.
