Delhiites love flouting rules. Stop line violations, jumping red lights, improper parking — they do it all. And the number of people violating traffic rules continues to go up every year.

This year, the number of fines issued for traffic offences has gone up 26 per cent. In absolute figures, 34,44,442 challans have been issued. That’s one for every sixth person in the city.

Nonetheless, the city’s motorists remain unrepentant. Hear them plead: “I have tinted windows as the Delhi heat is unbearable,” or, “I drive carefully but what can I do when others drive rashly?”

No wonder, the police believe hefty fines are the only way to make Delhiites start following rules.
