Delhi experienced the season's hottest day on Thursday with the mercury shooting up to 44.4 degree celsius, breaking a four-year record in the month of May.

The city had recorded a high of 43.7 degrees on April 24, but since then, the mercury had been mostly showing a downward trend. The weatherman has predicted dust storms or thunder storms in some areas of the capital on Friday but said the temperatures are expected to go up further.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.9 degrees, a Met official said. Both the high and the low were normal for this time of the season, he said.

The maximum humidity level was 53 per cent while the minimum went down to as low as 13 per cent as hot dry winds added to the woes of the people.

The last time the temperature surpassed the 44-degree celsius mark in the month of May was in 2006. In that year, the seventh day of May recorded a high of 44.5 degrees.

The maximum temperature in the month of May was 43 degrees in 2009 (May 19), 43 degrees in 2008 (May 5) and 42.7 degrees in 2007 (May 16). The all-time record for the month was on May 29, 1944 when the mercury touched 47.2 degrees.

The weatherman has predicted partly cloudy sky on Friday with temperatures likely to oscillate between 28 degrees and 45 degrees.
