A month after a gang accused of 14 incidents of break-ins at government houses and setting them on fire in South Delhi was busted, another case was reported from Laxmi Bai Nagar area on Friday morning.
Unidentified burglars broke into the house of Anita Bali, a defence ministry employee, decamped with cash and valuables and then set the house on fire on Friday morning, police said.
“We had gone to Punjab to attend a wedding a day ago. On Friday, when we were returning, a neighbour called to inform our house was burning. When we reached, everything was gutted,” said Anita Bali, hands smeared with soot.
Her husband Ramvir Bali is a property dealer. No one was at home when the incident was reported.
The burglars had reportedly sneaked in from one of the windows in the backyard, police said.
“The burglars set the ground floor on fire. A family staying on the first floor noticed it. They raised an alarm and informed the fire department and police,” Bali said.
Police said the gang set the houses on fire to destroy evidences that could lead to their trail.
Two months ago three houses in the adjacent block were also set on fire by burglars. The house was completely gutted and Bali claimed cash and jewellery worth over Rs 2 lakh were missing.
“We are investigating the case and suspect the involvement of a gang operating in the area,” said H.G.S. Dhaliwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South).
“All important documents like birth certificates, bank papers, and educational certificates have been destroyed. Now we will have to begin everything from scratch,” Bali said.
On November 15, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police had busted a gang that would set homes on fire after committing burglaries. That gang was active in Kidwai Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, RK Puram and Kotla Mubarakpur.
