Mamta Thakur (42) was anxious as she bid her daughter good luck for her second board exam practical on Tuesday morning.

A few hours later, 17-year-old Biddhi returned to find her mother’s body at their 2nd floor apartment in Rohini Sector-9.

According to police, two armed assailants made a friendly entry into Mamta Thakur’s residence, physically assaulted the lone occupant, slashed her throat with knives and decamped with cash and jewellery amounting to Rs 15 lakhs, all in a matter of 45 minutes.

Police said the assailants showed no sign of nervousness even after they were allegedly caught red-handed by one of Mamta’s friends, overpowering and locking her away instead.

“We were informed about the incident around 2:30 pm by the victim’s husband, Praveen Kumar Thakur,” said Atul Katiyar, DCP, outer Delhi.

Police said Praveen (45) is a stockbroker and runs a brokerage firm at the V.C. Chowk complex near his residence.

“I had left home at around 9:45 am like I do usually, picked Biddhi up from her school after her practical exam and dropped her home around 2 pm when we discovered her body,” said Praveen, who has another 15-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son.

On reaching the apartment, she saw the door ajar and a splash of blood in the living room.

“She then followed the trail of blood and saw her mother’s body lying on the bedroom floor. She could also hear frantic knocks coming from the attached bathroom and opened it to find a family friend and neighbour, Anjali Khera,” said Praveen.

“Anjali and Mamta usually had lunch together. So, she had gone to Mamta’s house at about 2.15 pm as usual,” said B.S Khera, Anjali’s husband and Praveen’s business partner.

“When she walked in, she saw the two robbers searching for valuables in a cupboard. Though she tried to back away, they pointed to Mamta’s corpse and threatened to do the same to her if she made the slightest sound, before locking her into the bathroom,” added Khera.

Police said the whole incident was flawlessly planned. “The assailants seemed to be well-versed with the whole family’s routine and also where the valuables were kept,” said a senior police officer.

“They knew that the children would be at school and Praveen at his office. The timing was precise, as the duo seemed to know that they could expect a friendly entry around 2 pm, as that is allegedly the time when Mamta usually had lunch from a neighbourhood restaurant delivered to her daily,” he added.

According to police, a case of robbery and murder has been registered at the Prashant Vihar Police Station and investigations into the matter are underway.
