For five-long hours, three members of the Special Staff of South Delhi Police combed the serpentine lanes of Vikhroli in Mumbai to nab Ram Singh alias Vijay .
On March 10, he came to Mumbai on a train after he allegedly killed 20-year-old Radhika Tanwar on March 8 after stalking her for over three- and-a-half years. After they got confirmation that Vijay was in Mumbai, they immediately dispatched a team headed by inspector Aishvir Singh of Special Staff. The team, along with a person who knew Vijay, reached Mumbai on Friday afternoon. “He is one of his acquaintances and knew Vijay,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
The police swarmed the 10-kilometre radius area in Vikhroli and finally managed to find the house where he was staying. The police team had information about a person who might have given shelter to Vijay in Mumbai. They surrounded the place and waited patiently for him. Finally, he was tracked and arrested at 11:00pm on Friday from Tagore Nagar, Vikhroli.
“In view of the sensitivity of the matter and ghastly nature of the crime, 19 teams of officers from South District were formed. The incident was thoroughly analysed. The way the crime was committed, the route of the victim from Naraina Vihar to Satya Niketan was dissected and probable clues were contemplated,” said HGS Dhaliwal.
The police after ascertaining the fact that Vijay was the alleged killer after his friends Tabrez and Ashraf told them found out that he had fled to Mumbai. The alleged killer and his friends are all from Sitapur in Biswa District in Western Uttar Pradesh.
The police said that during questioning Vijay claimed that he bought the weapon from Gurgaon, came to Delhi and tracked the route and routine of the girl. He made his first failed attempt to kill her on March 5. The police have recovered the weapon of offence from Sheikh Sheikhu, a resident of Kotla Mubarakpur.
The police said four people have been arrested in the case. While Vijay has been sent on police remand his three friends Ashraf, Tabrez and Sheikhu have been sent to judicial custody.
