Madhya Pradesh’s forest department has launched a hunt to trace the three nine-month-old cubs of a tigress found dead in 448 sq kms of the Bandhavgarh tiger reserve, 481 kms north-east of Bhopal, on Tuesday evening.

“Forest guards found the body of the tigress, believed to be poisoned, near Pataur area on the outskirts of the reserve,” said the reserve’s field director C. K. Patil. There were no injury marks on the body of the eight-year-old old tigress. The body has been sent for post-mortem to determine cause of death.

Patil said the cubs were last seen at 4 pm on Tuesday, two hours before the body was found. “Huge growth of lantana (wild weed) in the reserve has hampered search operations,” said Patil, while expressing confidence that the cubs would be in fine health.
