Activist Yogendra Yadav was detained by Delhi Police late on Monday night from the site of a farmers' protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
Swaraj Abhiyan member Yadav tweeted a picture of himself in a torn shirt, claiming he had been beaten up, manhandled and "arrested at the Parliament Street police station".
Earlier, a 'tractor march' for the cause of farmers' rights was organised by the Swaraj Abhiyan group led by Yadav and Prashant Bhushan. The protesters were prevented from placing a "plough" in a symbol of protest outside the Prime Minister's residence.
Bhushan, who is also Yadav's lawyer, tweeted that he was not allowed to enter the police station where Yadav was detained.
I have been beaten up, manhandled, dragged, pushed and arrested at the parliament street police station. pic.twitter.com/kbJgT9rSuh— Yogendra Yadav (@_YogendraYadav) August 10, 2015
Now our fines are being snatched. They say we are being arrested and taken to jail— Yogendra Yadav (@_YogendraYadav) August 10, 2015
All of us, 96 in all, are now being arrested. But what's the crime, I wonder.— Yogendra Yadav (@_YogendraYadav) August 10, 2015
Is standing peacefully with a Hal an offence? We were not obstructing traffic, were willing to cooperate with any reasonable condition.— Yogendra Yadav (@_YogendraYadav) August 10, 2015
"Illegally detained for 4 hours, police not even allowing YY to meet me as his lawyer, in violation of SC orders which mandates legal access."
Scores of farmers from across the country had planned to place an installation in front of the Prime Minister's residence as a symbol of protest against the Delhi Race Course, which they want to be converted into a farmers' memorial.
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter to describe Yadav's protest as a peaceful one and condemned the incident.
"I strongly condemn the treatment metted out to Yogendraji by Delhi police. They were protesting peacefully. It is their fundamental right."
Both Bhushan and Yadav were expelled by the AAP
