Idgah abattoir to shut in June

After facing flak from the Supreme Court over delayed functioning of the Ghazipur slaughterhouse, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) plans to shut down the Idgah slaughterhouse from June 1.
Currently, the halal section at Idgah is still functional, whereas the jhatka section has already been shifted to Ghazipur.
“A final decision is yet to be taken... but we have... a proposal which will be tabled in the standing committee meeting soon,” said a senior MCD official who declined to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
“Once the Idgah slaughterhouse is shut down, all slaughters will take place at Ghazipur. We plan to lease it out to a private party to run it,” the official added.
However, butchers at the Idgah slaughterhouse are apprehensive of shifting to Ghazipur.
“Though the jhatka section has become operational since last December, only 80-100 animals are slaughtered every day. The place is too small to cater to the city’s demand,” said Mohammed Asif, Delhi Meat Merchant Association president.
“The MCD claims to slaughter 5,000 animals per day but in reality it is only 1,000 animals —which is insufficient,” he added.
Earlier, the civic agency had said it would make chilling plants and buy refrigerated vans for transporting meat to all parts of the city from Ghazipur. Plans were also made to develop a software by which each animal being slaughtered could be identified by by microchips.
