IITs on faculty-finding mission

From a recruitment drive to induct Indian professionals working abroad to identifying potential teachers among the students and grooming them, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are pulling all stops to ensure the prestigious technology institutions in the country are not deprived of teachers.
With six new IITs set up the previous year and two more coming up next academic year, the IITs have before them a huge task of finding faculty to teach the increasing proportion of students. The government already approved creation of 30 faculty posts every year for the first three years in each of the eight new IITs. Even in the seven old IITs, the faculty – pupil
ratio is 1:11 to 1:12 while the efficient ratio is 1:9.
One proposal under the ‘Faculty Induction and Development Programme in IITs - FIDP’, discussed in the IIT council meet chaired by HRD Minister Arjun Singh on Wednesday is to compile data of young professionals in Europe, America, Japan, Israel etc who are keen to return and take up academic positions.
A core group comprising IIT directors would go on the recruitment drive either online or visit approach and depending on the need of an institute and preference of the candidate he can join faculty of one of the IITs..
“The IITs have discussed the issue and we are looking at various ways of working together to attract quality faculty,” Professor Surendra Prasad, director, IIT Delhi said.
Under ‘Recruit and Incubate New Faculty of IITs’, the institutes would recruit potential students completing Phd either in India or abroad. They would be supported to continue their post doc at premier research institutions of their choice with all expenses supported. During the period of two years, they would require to learn beyond research like teaching in universities with large enrolments.
Under the ‘Catch them Young Scheme’, young potential would be identified, groomed and would be taken as assistant lecturer during his master’s itself. He can complete his research while working understudy as faculty and also draw salary.
But some IITs said it would be too early to pursue a student to take up teaching. “A student of that level would not be mature to decide nor would be excited to become a professor,” Professor Gautam Barua, director, IIT Guwahati said.
