The east Delhi municipal corporation, which has faced a lot of flak for poor sanitation in the area, on Thursday launched 30 new garbage collection trucks to replace its old, outdated fleet.

This comes after a series of stories by HT, in September, highlighting the unsanitary condition of east Delhi’s colonies and streets. The articles had prompted east Delhi commissioner SS Yadav to promise more machinery.

The new fleet is part of the corporation’s 70-truck deal with Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors. Each truck cost Rs 20 lakh and is in compliance with pollution emission norms. The remaining lot will arrive by the month-end.

The vehicles were put on the job immediately, collecting trash from dump yards and depositing them in Ghazipur — the Capital’s oldest and largest landfill.

In addition, smaller trash vehicles are being procured, Yadav said. The corporation has also started door-to-door trash collection in some wards. That apart, it launched a dedicated call centre for citizens. Residents can dial 155303 between 6am and 10pm with complaints or seek information on services.
