None lost their lives due to road accidents in the national capital on the New Year eve when police prosecuted close to 500 people for traffic violations, including 388 for drunken driving.

This was the second time in the past three days when the capital did not report a single fatal accident, Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said.

"During a period of 24 hours ending 10 am today, there was not a single fatal accident in the capital. On December 29 also were had zero fatal accidents in the city," Garg said.

He attributed this to the increased presence of police on the roads who were enforcing traffic rules.

Garg said 388 people were challaned for mixing driving and drinking in the capital on the New Year eve. "A total of 484 challans were issued during the drive," he said.

Last year, a total of 189 revelers were prosecuted for driving under the influence of alchohol. A total of 274 persons had been prosecuted for drunken driving during the new year eve.

Anybody found driving or attempting to drive a vehicle with an alcohol level above 30 mg per 100 ml blood faces imprisonment up to six months or a Rs 2,000 fine or both. If it is a subsequent challan, they may end up getting a jail term of up to two years or a fine of Rs 3,000 or both.
