With 58 medals so far, India is looking to break its Commonwealth Games record of 69, set at Manchester in the UK in 2002.

The 24 gold medals India won by Saturday end are two more than it won at the last Games, in Melbourne, Australia, in 2006.

The largest contributors to India’s 2010 tally have been the shooters, wrestlers and archers, who have more than lived up to the nation’s expectations.

On Saturday, ace shooter Gagan Narang racked up another gold — taking his tally to four and the shooters’ overall to 21 medals, including 12 golds.

Wrestlers have been the second-highest contributors to the country’s medals tally, winning nine golds and a total of 14 medals.

Gymnast Ashish Kumar, meanwhile, got India its first medals in the field, winning a silver and a bronze.

On the down side, a day after an exclusive Hindustan Times report on how tickets for Games events were rotting or being sold as scrap, the Commonwealth Games Federation on Saturday launched an investigation.

“If people go to the ticketing counters and they don’t get tickets, there is a problem. We have asked for an investigation and we hope to get a report by tomorrow,” CGF chief Michael Fennell said, at the customary press conference.
