The country on Thursday paid rich tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 92nd birth anniversary.

President Pratibha Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi were among the first to pay floral tributes to the late leader at her memorial at ‘Shakti Sthal´.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was also present at the remembrance ceremony at the memorial, which was decorated with hundreds of flowers on the occasion.

Born on November 19, 1917, Gandhi was the first woman Prime Minister of India. After her father Jawaharlal Nehru’s death in 1964, she became a member of Lal Bahadur Shastri’s cabinet as Information and Broadcasting Minister.

After his sudden demise, she took over as Prime Minister in 1966.
