In order to ensure little or no queuing at the toll plaza on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, the Gurgaon police have shot off a letter to the MCD, asking them to integrate their commercial tax collecting system with that of the prepaid tag of Delhi Gurgaon Super Connectivity Limited (DGSCL).

The DGSCL is the concessionaire company of the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

Currently, all commercial vehicles, including call centre cabs, which are in large numbers, have to wait at the toll plaza to pay commercial tax in order to enter Delhi, leading to traffic chaos.

There are close to two lakh vehicles that pass through Delhi border toll plaza every day. Out of that, more than 50% are commercial vehicles.

The DGSCL collects commercial tax from vehicles registered for commercial purpose on behalf of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Out of the 32 entry gates at the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, 16 are used for vehicles entering Delhi. Six of them have the tag facility for smooth passage of traffic, but even the tag users have to wait to pay MCD tax.

“We have written to both the MCD and the DGSCL to integrate both the taxes as vehicles that have a prepaid tax also have to wait at the toll plaza. To avoid long queues, a software has to be developed so that the commercial vehicles don’t need to stop over to pay MCD tax,” said Bharti Arora DCP Traffic Gurgaon.

The civic agency, on the other, had has contended that once they receive a proposal from the DGSCL, they will examine it for implementation. “We haven’t received any proposal so far. Once we do, we will surely examine it. The move will help keep a tab on the traffic mess. That is why we are quite open to suggestions,” said Yogender Chandolia, chairman of standing committee of MCD.

The MCD collects tax from commercial vehicles at all entry points to Delhi. However, at the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, it’s the concessionaire company that collects the tax on behalf of the MCD.

“There was a proposal to integrate tax collection by the MCD and the DGSCL. Technically, it is possible to integrate MCD’s prepaid sticker with tag, but the project never took off,” said a DGSCL official.
