“We wrote to the home ministry and the Maharashtra police’s DGP last week after Tamgadge was threatened. His supervisory officers in the case are senior IPS officers and have protection already,” said a CBI source.

The source added, “We at times seek protection for IOs in high-profile probes.”

The CBI’s probe has shown that the deceased were killed in cold-blood before the alleged fake encounter, while forensic tests revealed that the four deceased had not fired a single bullet.

The CBI chargesheet is likely to name around 10 Gujarat police officers, including IPS officers, both serving and retired.

It will include the names of the seven police officials who allegedly fired at the deceased in the alleged encounter, according to the FIR of the Ahmedabad Crime Branch.

Those likely to be named may include absconding ADGP PP Pandey, former state police chief KR Kaushik, then DIGP DG Vanzara and then ACP GL Singhal and NK Amin.

Others to be named may be inspectors Tarun Barot and JG Parmar, commando Anaju Chaudhary, Mohanbhai Nanjibhai, Mohanbhai Kalasava and K Chauhan.

The agency may name Intelligence Bureau’s special director Rajinder Kumar in its supplementary chargesheet.
