Kya hua? Guzar gaya kya? (What happened? Is he dead?), was what Rajbir’s father asked when his younger son informed him the ACP had been shot dead.
This was over five hours after the incident had taken place. Rajbir’s family reached the police station in Gurgaon at 3.05 am, still not sure why they had been called.
On reaching the station, the family’s first question to Anil Shukla, DCP (Crime) was “Where is he?” After a brief conversation with Shukla, Rajbir’s brother turned to his father and said, Bhai sahab ko goli maar di (Brother was shot).
Rajbir’s father was the first to ask about the killer. Kisne maara? (Who shot him?), To which the police officer replied, Koi property dealer tha, Vijay. (A property dealer, Vijay). Kya? Vijay ne maara? (What? Vijay shot him?) said Rajbir’s father in utter disbelief.
“He knew my dad for decades. Without a doubt, this is a major conspiracy. My dad always had security so we never took the threats seriously,” said Rohit.
Around 3.20 am, Rajbir’s family was taken to the mortuary adjacent to the police station to identify the body.
On seeing his son’s body, Rajbir’s father repeatedly said, Itna risk lene ki kya zarurat thi (What was the need to take so much risk). Rajbir’s parents fainted after seeing their son’s body and around 4 am, the family got into their car and went to Shivaji Nagar where Rajbir’s parents reside.
Rajbir is survived by his wife, 14-year-old son Rohit and 11-year-old daughter.
