It was a day they will remember for life. More than 50 women, who conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) at New Delhi's Southend IVF and Fertility Centre, were provided an opportunity to share their experiences on Mothers' Day.

"We chose this day to bring these women together and make them interact with each other. During treatment, these women used to be so tense that they hardly intermingled," said Dr Sonia Malik, director of the centre. "It was also an opportunity to see how the children have fared," she added.

The oldest child present was nine years old and the youngest a month-and-a-half old in the event that lasted for three hours at Essex farms in south Delhi.

More than 100 people participated in the get-together, which the doctors hope, will help create a sort of support group to alley fears among women who want to undergo IVF treatment. "There are so many myths and fears about the process of conception through IVF that only women who have experienced it firsthand will be able to rest the doubts of people," said Dr Malik.

Owing to societal pressure, most women tend to shy away from socialising and cut themselves of from family and friends. These events, feel doctors, will help such women in regaining confidence.

Recently, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences also invited such mothers with their babies to spread awareness.
