A 58-year-old government employee was killed and five others, including three women, were injured when a Jail van ferrying under-trial prisoners rammed into a bus stand in outer Delhi’s Rohini area on Saturday afternoon, police said.
BS Jaiswal, DCP (outer), said the incident occurred at 12.15pm when the said van, which belongs to the 3rd Battalion of the Delhi Police and was carrying 50 under-trials from the Rohini Court Complex to the Tihar Jail, rammed into a bus stop located at Madhuban Chowk.
“I was waiting for a bus to go when I saw the bus jump onto the bus shelter, which collapsed due to the impact. Along with me, there were about six more people waiting and all of us were trapped beneath the iron roof of the bus stand,” said Shefali (name changed) one of victims who got injured.
According to police, the trapped pedestrians were rushed to the nearby Ambedkar Hospital where Arun Kumar Mamgain, a resident of the IDPL Apartments located in Pitampura who used to work at the CGO Complex at Lodhi Road, was declared brought dead on arrival.
Police said the other injured persons were discharged after being administered minor first aid. “The errant driver, ASI Brahm Singh of the 3rd Battalion has been arrested; we are investigating whether or not he was drunk at the time of the accident,” DCP Jaiswal added.
