Perhaps taking a cue from the chaos that surrounded the introduction of semester system in Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has now delayed its own plans by a year. The semester system was supposed to be introduced in the 2011-12 academic session.
The university said its teachers needed more time to restructure and revise the courses. "Last year, we revised the Master's, M.Phil and Ph.d courses. All this was very time-consuming. Since the number of courses at the undergraduate level are more, we need time to restructure them properly," said Simi Malhotra, media coordinator, JMI.
University authorities also said that it would be wiser to wait a year. "It's been a year since we introduced the semester system at the Master's level. After a review, we concluded that we needed another year to implement the semester system at the undergraduate level so that the transition is smooth," said vice-chancellor Najeeb Jung.
The JMI has reintroduced its Bachelor of Arts (BA) programme, which had been scrapped last year. Its course structure has been revamped based on the Tripos Programme at the Oxford and Cambridge universities.
