Two Class 10 boys from southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh area were apprehended on Monday morning for allegedly killing a classmate as they resented his academic record and appointment as class captain.
The incident, which highlights the alarming rise in juvenile crime, took place on Sunday evening when the accused duo lured the victim, Shubham, to a secluded spot outside the village and beat him to death before fleeing to Haryana’s Jhajjar district. They were apprehended and brought back to the Capital on Monday morning.
They reportedly confessed to the crime, saying they didn’t intend to kill the boy but “just wanted to teach him a lesson”.
According to the police, Shubham, the son of a labourer, was a bright student and often praised by his class teacher, making the two accused jealous. The last straw was reportedly when Shubham was appointed the class captain.
On Sunday evening, the two boys asked the victim to accompany them for a cycle race. When the trio reached a secluded, open field outside the village, the accused got off the cycle and pushed Shubham to the ground. They punched him before one of them picked up a wooden stick and hit Shubham on the head, police said.
“Shubham collapsed on the ground and the two juveniles left him on the spot and fled to Jhajjar,” said a senior police officer. The crime came to light when Shubham’s worried parents started searching for him on Sunday night. The boy had reportedly told them of his plans to spend the evening with his classmates. The search party soon widened to include other local residents who went to adjoining villages looking for the boy.
Shubham’s body was finally spotted at the crime site near a petrol pump. “Shubham’s classmates told us he was a brilliant student. He was reportedly being bullied by the two boys but never complained,” another police officer said.
