After a woman spurned his marriage proposal, a 37 year old driving school instructor barged into her home, tore her clothes, set her house on fire and later on also set himself ablaze in Kamla Market area of central Delhi on Monday afternoon, police said.

The incident was reported around 2.30 pm Monday when the woman was alone at her home. The man identified as Niyaz alias Nihal Singh barged in the house of the woman and asked her to marry him. “When she refused, Niyaz said that he would teach her a lesson.

He bought along a can of petrol, first poured it all over the house, then on the woman and then on himself. He then set the house and himself on fire,” said Jaspal Singh, deputy commissioner of police (central).

Niyaz was rushed to LNJP Hospital where he is admitted with 90 percent burn injuries. “While he was being taken to hospital, he told the police it was the woman who had poured kerosene on him. Though it seems far from the truth, we will recreate the chain of events with the help of forensic experts,” said the officer.
