JNU to open its gates for school students for a day

In a first, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will be holding an ‘Open Day’ for school students from Delhi and national capital region (NCR) on November 21 at the convention centre to introduce them to various courses available for higher education in JNU.

JNU rector Chintamani Mahapatra said all departments of the university will give presentations and put up a stall where all information regarding the department will be available.

Mahapatra said that JNU students and teachers from all departments will be available for interaction with the school students. He said students can approach any department and get relevant information.

“If a student wants to find out what are the courses available in Biotech area in JNU, then the student can go to the stall of the School of Biotechnology. Information and get information on the research being done by students, courses available and career prospectus after doing the courses,” Mahapatra said.

JNU has 13 schools and centres of study of inter-disciplinary research. “JNU is already extremely popular among students who want to take up research in higher studies. But we are trying to reach out school students because if they get to know the various options available to her then they can make informed decisions,” said the official.

Mahapatra said students will also get a chance to tour the campus and visit various school buildings, library and laboratories. “Our campus is huge and it will give students a chance to explore the campus area,” he said.

The university will be writing to various schools about the plan, and schools will be asked to send groups of students for the ‘Open Day’.

The university was recently in news after some students organised an event on 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised. After the event three students, including the former students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested. The students were later released on bail.
