Senior BJP leader and Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Murli Manohar Joshi on Wednesday attacked telecom minister Kapil Sibal over his comments relating to the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on the 2G scam, saying the remarks have harmed CAG reputation as a constitutional body.

Last week, Sibal had challenged the CAG's report on the 2G spectrum scam, saying the figure of Rs1.76 lakh crore was "utterly erroneous and without any basis".

The CAG also joined the PAC chief in slamming the telecom minister on Wednesday saying public statements on its report on 2G spectrum allocation were highly improper.

"Making public comments on the matter, which is being considered by a Parliamentary Committee, is highly improper and may even amount to contempt of the House," CAG said.

"The sense of the PAC was that what Sibal said was improper. By that statement, the CAG’s reputation has been harmed...I have been asked to take appropriate action against him so that this does not happen in future," Joshi said in his capacity as PAC chairman.

Politically, this brings Joshi's position in line with that of his party, which, too, has attacked Sibal’s remarks at its Guwahati national executive meet.

Joshi also said the PAC discused the alleged irregularities pertaining to Army canteen sales and supply of ration to troops with the three service chiefs. He said the discussions were positive and refused to give further details.
