With a case of abetment to suicide registered against him, Haryana Minister of State for Home Gopal Kanda on Sunday night tendered his resignation from the council of ministers.
Sources said Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had asked Kanda to put in his papers and save himself from the ignominy of being sacked. Kanda personally went to submit his resignation at Hooda’s Pant Marg residence in New Delhi on Sunday night.
Pressure was mounting on Hooda to sack Kanda after a former air-hostess of the latter’s MDLR airlines named him in her suicide note. The Delhi police had subsequently booked him under Section 306 of the IPC.
Hooda had initially been non-committal on the issue but later told a news agency in Kolkata that appropriate action would taken in the matter.
INLD president Om Prakash Chautala has demanded Kanda’s arrest and the state government’s dismissal. He said Kanda had a criminal background. “He was involved in a scuffle with a former cricketer, attacked income tax, police officials and INLD workers,’’ he alleged.
Meanwhile, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said the National Commission for Women (NCW) will probe the case. “We will send the case to NCW to give us report. Based on it, action will be taken,” Tirath said.
