A head constable of Delhi Police was killed and three others were injured when four armed assailants opened fire inside a courtroom at Karkardooma Court Complex in east Delhi on Wednesday.
The incident occurred around 11.15am when a criminal, who has more than 100 cases against him, was being produced at courtroom number 73. Those present in the courtroom, including the judge, had to run for cover as the assailants fired indiscriminately, eyewitnesses said.
Head constable Ram Kumar took five bullets in his body and died. Another policeman, who was injured in the firing, has been identified as the naib of the courtroom.
Police said seven rounds were fired inside the courtroom while the proceedings were on. All the four attackers were caught by lawyers, litigants and police personnel present on the premises. Two pistols were recovered.
Police suspect it to be a case of rivalry between two gangs from northeast Delhi. The prime target was Irfan alias Chenu who had a longstanding rivalry with a gang headed by a criminal named Nasir. The attackers are suspected to be contract killers hired by Nasir’s gang.
A case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered at Farsh Bazar police station. Several teams have been formed to investigate and catch the culprits behind the daring attack.
