“Had I known that I was travelling illegally I would have never uttered my real name in front of the airport officials,” Paramjit Kaur told a city court on Monday. Kaur was arrested on April 18 at the Indira Gandhi International Airport along with suspended BJP MP Babu Bhai Katara.

Air India officials stumbled upon the emigration racket when they were searching for the missing passport of another passenger and Kaur had uttered her real name instead of ‘Sardaben’, the wife of Katara, on whose passport she was travelling.

Kaur added that the travel agent who had brought her to Delhi had taken away her passport after reaching the airport. Kaur’s mother Mohinder Kaur and her mother-in-law Charanjeet Kaur said Kaur was paying the price for not being literate.

“Joginder Singh, an agent in our village, approached us and told us that he could facilitate the travel if we paid him a few lakh rupees. He had also introduced us to another agent Sandhu. We did not know that he was arranging my daughter’s visit through fraudulent means,” said Mohinder.

Kaur said her only fault was that she wanted to meet her husband who is in New York. As Katara and Kaur were holding diplomatic passports they were exempted from checking by immigration officials at the airport.

Paramjit was sent to 14 days of judicial custody. Charanjeet said it was Sandhu who had brought her daughter-in-law to Delhi and introduced her to Rajinder Gampa, one of the accused.
