The structure
There aren’t any programme courses in the university anymore. A student has the option to drop out after the second or the third year with some recognition.
Two-year exit option
A student who chooses to drop out after the second year will get a diploma in the subjects that she took admission in.
“While the university does not advise this, a student can drop out after completing two years of education and get a diploma. Such a student has an opportunity to come back within 10 years from taking admission to complete her degree,” says an official DU communication to the prospective students.
Such a student will have studied 11 foundation courses, eight papers from the main discipline that the student took admission in, two papers from the course that was chosen as a minor in the third semester and two applied courses (skill-based courses) which will also be chosen in the third semester.
Three-year exit option
Three-year exit optionA student who chooses to opt out after three years will get a Bachelor in discipline 1.If a student, for example, chooses to study Physics, she will get a Bachelor in Physics degree.“A student who chooses to drop out after the third year will be at par with graduates in all parts of the country. These students are free to sit for MA entrances as well as the civil services examinations. They will go in for a two-year long Masters’ degree,” said Gulshan Sawhney, deputy dean, students’ welfare.Such a student will have studied 11 foundation papers, 14 main papers, four papers from the minor course chosen in the third semester and four applied courses. Four-year exit optionStudents who choose to stay on after the completion of the third year will get a Bachelor with Honours degree.The curriculum in the final year is research-based, with research methodology papers and projects. Such a student will have studied 11 foundation courses, 20 papers (including research) from the main discipline that the student took admission in, six papers from the course that was chosen as a minor in the third semester and four applied courses (skill-based courses) which will also be chosen in the third semester.Such a student will have the opportunity to complete her Masters’ degree in only one year provided it is pursued in Delhi University’s departments. This student will also have the option of pursuing a Masters’ degree in the minor subject, provided she has studied all six papers of that subject.
