In the middle of crucial interrogation of Indian Mujahideen operatives Yasin Bhatkal and Asadullah Akhtar by the National Investigating Agency (NIA), Union home ministry is learnt to have initiated proceedings for repatriation of its inspector general (intelligence, operations and policy) Loknath Behra to his parent cadre Kerala

“Who told you? Let me check and get back,” said Sharad Kumar, director general of the NIA, neither confirming nor denying the development. He did not answer the call after that.

Behra, a 1985-batch IPS officer, was unreachable despite repeated attempts.

Sources say Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde learnt to have given a go-ahead to Behra’s repatriation after complaints of ‘indiscretions’ from the sister agencies.

Shinde wanted to send a message across the rank and file that he will tolerate any action that can be construed as stepping out line.

Behra, one of the four IGs of the NIA, had headed the NIA team that had gone to the US to question Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative David Coleman Headley.

He was one of the initial inductees in the NIA when it was created in 2009.

Along with its founding director general Radha Vinod Raju, Behra had played a key role in establishing the NIA.

Sources say Behra still had some time left in his deputation with the agency.

Before the NIA, Behra had a long and a significant stint in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as well where he had conducted probe into the Gutka case nd Haren Pandya murder case.
